Ahmed Marei purchased a piece of land in 1924 close to Benha in the Qalyoubia province in Egypt.  He moved his branch of the family from their traditional area in Sharkia province. He began cultivating the land with many different crops at the time some of which were considered very exotic such as Almonds and Apricots. However, it was one crop in particular that was of interest to him and that was Citrus.  He began cultivating the majority of the land with varieties that were then commercially available. His passion paid off when he received several awards from the government on the superior quality achieved on the farm.

Sayed Marei, Ahmed’s son, carried on the tradition of farming the land and expanded into several other business including starting the first privately owned Arabian horse breeding program. Sayed also had a political ambition and served as Agricultural Minister under both presidents Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar El Sadat. Sayed was also the first representative for Egypt in the FAO. He expanded the farm further and was one of the first to export citrus out of Egypt.

In the mid 1990’s he began to travel to all areas of the world from Italy, Spain, South Africa, United States, and Australia to learn more about the different varieties and cultivation methods. He established the first professional citrus nursery in Egypt and acquired varieties from some of the leading breeding programs worldwide. Along with a German grant program that began in the late 90’s the Nursery began producing superior quality trees and varieties available for farmers in Egypt to further enhance the quality of the produce and make Egypt a global player in the Citrus export business. Marei Nursery became the only nursery in Egypt recognized worldwide for the quality of the trees produced.
